A List of the Officers of the Militia of England  and Wales 1878
Bedfordshire Battalionof Militia, consisting of six companies (at Southampton)
Lieut. John Cater, Date of Commission - 26 Mar 1778

There's also a John Cater, ensign in the 40th Company of Foot, April 1779
