Charles Leek 1792
« on: Friday 26 August 22 12:00 BST (UK) »
I have a Charles Leek in my tree born about 1792. I know who he married, where he lived after marriage but cannot confirm correct parents. He was a stone mason and apparently moved from Merionithshire to Breconshire to help build bridges.
Other info.....His first wife Mary Parry was born in Hay On Wye. They had 5 children. His second wife was Margaret Humphrey born in Brecon area. One son William who lived and died in Pontypool.
Charles died in 1850.
Thanks.

Hi, What info do you have linking him to Merionethshire?

Only one I can find  on Anc 1792 +/- 5yrs in Wales is in Breconshire 1791 parents John & Elizabeth, unless he was not baptised. Did he name any children John/Elizabeth?

1841 both parents not born in county Monmouthshire both children stated are, so he had lived there over 10yrs.  Could be born in any county but not Monmouthshire.

Both marriages in Breconshire. First in 1812 which would put him around 20ish, bit young to be a master mason, moving to build bridges, possibly an apprentice/stone Lab?

Also he would have needed time to move meet and marry prior to 1812. Both of the parish on marriage which means they had been living there long enough or more to have banns called, I think it is, but stand to be corrected.

Just my thoughts, here is the bapt incase you have not seen.

Name:   Charles Leeks
Baptism Age:   0
Baptism Date:   3 Jul 1791
Baptism Place:   Partrishow, Breconshire, Wales
Father:   John
Mother:   Elizabeth
Page number:   24

Up left a little on map is Hay on Wye. Down left a little is Gardiffaith, Mon.

This is the only baptism I can find also. It was a cousin of my father's who told me he was from Merionithshire.
She was wrong about information about another member of the family, so she could be wrong about this too.
Thanks.
No children called Elizabeth or John.
Mary, Jane, Solomon & Charles.
First wife dies between 1832 and 1836.

Found this earlier

Name:   Elizabeth Leek
Baptism Age:   0
Birth Date:   1817
Baptism Date:   20 Nov 1817
Baptism Place:   Hay, Breconshire, Wales
Father:   Charles (occ.mason)
Mother:   Mary
Page number:   36

Also seen a few bapts that could be siblings of Charles with same parents but in Llanbedr area just across on map posted.

Think one maybe on freereg, John Leeks around 1780s. The other is Anne Leeks about 1780, not checked any further. All a bit spec, but it seems more fitting that a bapt for Charles is in and around the area you knew he was.

Thank you Cas.
I did know that one of William and Mary's children, Jane, died in infancy. It looks like there was more than one infant death.
