Place of birth in Scotland from 1851 English census
« on: Monday 29 August 22 10:44 BST (UK) »
I’m trying to find the birthplace of James Patterson who was born in Scotland but is found living in Liverpool where he married Janet Connell in 1856 and when she died he married her sister Agnes who are both from Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire.
The censuses from 1861 to 1881 just give his birthplace as Scotland. However there is a possible census for him in 1851 which gives a birthplace of Hampsay parish, Scotland.
Does anyone know of a parish which could have been mis-translated as such?

Yes, thanks. Unfortunately there are 38 James Patterson/Paterson’s born with a father called James between 1824 and 1831. I was hoping to narrow it down a bit as I can’t afford the credits to look at each one to see which fathers were farmers!
There is only one with a double T which looked promising from Lochmaben but that didn’t check out.

I saw that one but it didn't give much info. Why did you reject it?

I wouldn't worry too much about the double T!

When and where  did he marry Agnes?

West Derby, 1868 :(
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I looked at the family & it looks like that James married a Jane Irving & stayed around Lochmaben (in Cummertrees in 1861). I could be wrong though.

There was a James Pat*erson and wife Margaret Chartris having children baptised in Wamphrey in the 1830s but their son James was bpt 1837. James snr was a labourer.

Also a son John bpt 1831.

What was your James's children named?
