Jane RYALL marriage - 1837 Horsington
« on: Tuesday 30 August 22 15:22 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone is able to look up a marriage at Horsington which took place 7 Jun 1837 between a Jane RYALL & William ?? please.  I have seen a transcription but would like to know if William's surname could possibly be LILLICRAP and if any further details are given. Thank you.

Hmm not sure about the end of the word but it doesn't look like "crap"

Having said that the signature does look like Lillicrapp
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

It says William is "of Charlton something bachelor"

Jane a spinster

witnesses Chas Ryall & Ann something Gifford

The marriage bonds definitely have Lillicrapp and the signature is the same
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Thank you everyone for your help. The couple moved to Australia in 1837 and I am interested in the LILLICRAP line. William came from Werrington on the Cornwall/Devon border and I was surprised to find the marriage in Somerset, so wanted to know if it looked even remotely like LILLICRAP - I have seen it transcribed as LILLIESOFT!

The spelling on the entry is Lillecrap not Lillicrapp & William has signed as Lillecrapp

Looking at the marriage register entry, I can see how a transcriber could end up with Lilliesoft, but the groom's signature there is more clearly Lillecrapp, and - as has been said already - the signature on the marraige bond is even clearer.

The groom's parish is Charlton Horethorne which is in the SE of Somerset, near Horsington.

The witness is Ann Martin Gifford. This might help confirm that this is the right couple, as they seem to have called one of their sons John Martin Lillecrapp.

Ann Martin Gifford appears to be the daughter of Humphery Gifford and Lucy Martin Ryall. Jane and the other witness Charles Ryall, and also an Ann Martin Ryall, appear to be children of Mesach and Elizabeth Ryall of Maperton. Mesach Ryall of Marston Bigot married an Elizabeth Martin from Horsington in 1806. A Mesach Ryall - presumably the same one - married an Ann Martin in 1797 and had a daughter Louisa in 1799 who is probably the same  Lucy Martin Ryall.
