From the Long Long Trail
Quote
Class Z Reserve

This was authorised by an Army Order of 3 December 1918. There were fears that Germany would not accept the terms of any peace treaty, and therefore the British Government decided it would be wise to be able to quickly recall trained men in the eventuality of the resumption of hostilities. Soldiers who were being demobilised, particularly those who had agreed to serve “for the duration”, were at first posted to Class Z. They returned to civilian life but with an obligation to return if called upon. The Z Reserve was abolished on 31 March 1920.

Do you have his medal card? According to it he received the Victory Medal, the War Medal and the 14-15 Star - the standard Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Given the 3 regiments he served in, and their deployments outside North West Europe, plus the word Egypt, possibly Medn refers to Mediterranean.

Went to Egypt 30 December 1915 as Pte 1015 with the 13th Btn of East Yorkshire Regt for 3 months

Presume no action based in Cairo

Then 13th Btn and 10th Btn were Transferred to France in March 1916

He was Transferred to 2/4th Btn of The West Riding Regt as Pte 27696
Then
He appears to have been transferred to 2/7th King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry as Pte 38574
and awarded a Disability Pension under that but also Demobbed 15 May 1919 as Class Z
Which as previous Genies have explained to me that as WW1 had Not yet ended until June 1919 Class Z meant they were still Fit to be Recalled from Reserve should fighting recommence.

I think Medn possibly means Mediterranean
Or Medication
Possibly Demobbed on Disability with Malaria ?

Medn is definitely Mediterranean.
A bit of licence taken by the clerk, should be
theatre of war (3) or MEF.
Malaria is a distinct possibility as men in the MEF were
dropping like flies from such diseases.
