Location of Flow Field, Hesket in the Forest in 1660's Please
« on: Friday 02 September 22 13:44 BST (UK) »
I have a baptism from Hesket in the Forest for 21st June 1663 and it says Rumney of 'Flow Field'.

Can anyone tell me the location of 'Flow Field' Please.

I have no idea if this is right, but thought I would pass it on as it caught my eye:

Depending on how clear the writing in the register is, or how the place name was interpreted, could it be Howfield by any chance?

 :-\

Added: unsure if that link will work as I hoped. If you find the place name Petterill about 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the map towards the left, and follow the first E or Petterill to the north, you should find it. Looks like a farmstead.

An image from the register is in this thread: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=865564.msg7357903
In my opinion, the 'F' iin Flow Field one of the least unclear characters. I had the same thought as Ruskie about Howfield, but deleted my posting because I think it is too much of a stretch to see the first letter as an H.

Thank you both very much. Was just going to post my other thread from the 'Handwriting' board when you did it for me Andy - thanks.
Yes I can see it could be How Field but not too sure. I have played around with the colours, etc but still can not get it any clearer.
On the full photo of the baptismal photo then I can not find another 'H' or 'F' like it. It was the Archivist in Carlisle who transcribed it as Flow Field but I'm not 100% but maybe the original copy is much clearer.

Nor have I any other children baptised there as this is a 'one off' until I get to see the original OPR's in Carlisle. Probably next year now.

Thank you so much and any other ideas and comments would be gratefully received.

Just another thought - I wonder if Flow Field may have been corrupted over the years to Howfield. Of course this is a leap of faith!!!!

Judy, have you looked to see if there's a Bishop's Transcript of the baptism? It's just possible that if one exists the same detail may have been included in the BT in a clearer hand, or at least the BT manuscript has survived in better condition.

Unfortunately I don't think this is in the BT's as it is not transcribed on any websites on the internet so had to get the Archivist to look and see if it was in the original OPR's.  :-[  I was pleasantly surprised that it was there.

A careful comparison of letter-forms in the rest of the extract shows that it doesn't start with F or f.

I don't see another capital H in this extract, but I doubt very much that H would be written squarely in that way at this period.

Looking at the other capitals here, the closest is J, as is in the month June.

J and I are equivalent at this date. The second letter appears to be t. So I think it is written Itonfeild, a township in Hesket in the Forest. See here ...
