On The Stage
« on: Monday 05 September 22 17:56 BST (UK) »
Help required.
I've been asked by a friend to see if their ancestor (EMILY SPRIGMORE) was on the stage,
either as a singer or an actress.
Not sure how to go about searching for any evidence.

Regards,
Bob

Emily Sprigmore (b1848 Lambeth, d1935 IOW)
Married William Thomas Gibbs 1874, St Mary's, Lambeth.

Something is amiss!

The marriage of Emily Sprigmore, St. Mary's Lambeth in 1874 is to a William Hodge Hurrell, occupation writer.
Her father is shown as William Sprigmore, builder.

There is no Emily GIBBS death registered 1935 IOW
There is an Emily Leifchild HURRELL.

Deaths Mar 1935   (>99%)
Hurrell    Emily L    86    I. Wight    2b   970

she was single. And born Broadstairs. And she left instructions that her  MSS of sacred verse be printed in 1000 volumes and given to the General of the Salvation Army.

My apologise to the above...I misread my own chart as it was folded at the time.
Reading it correctly you are right about the marriage and the death details. Sorry.

Which means as a stage performer, she may have sung/acted under the name SPRIGMORE
or HURRELL.

This looks like Emily who married William Hodge Hurrell. Is this the one we are looking for? I think they must have separated.

Yes, that is the correct marriage, and it is Emily I'm searhing for re acting/singing.
And yes, you could be right with the salvation army.

I did find a database of women who performed at the Adelphi Theatre, and no sprigmore or hurrell on that lisiting. Must remember she could have performed under a different name?
