Collins Marriage
« on: Saturday 10 September 22 15:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm asking for help on behalf a friend who has been researching her 'Collins' line for some time.

Her Collins family originate in Ireland but settled in the BlackHill area of Benfieldside, now Consett.

She is trying to trace a marriage between Peter Collins and Bridget Rooney.
They can be found together, firstly, on the 1861 census, living in Blackhill, were Peter was a labourer.
His year of birth is given as 1829, Bridget's as 1833, (both Ireland) and they have their first two children, Mary Ann, born c1859 and Peter, born c1861.
I'm guessing that they may have married within a year of so of Mary Ann's birth, but cannot find any trace in Durham.
They remained in the Lanchester area, Peter dying in 1910 and Bridget in 1909 - which is a shame as the 1911 census may have given a clue as to how many years they had been wed.

My friend has a marriage certificate, from the Lanchester area, of a Patrick Collins and a Catherine Rooney, who married in 1873.
She believes that Patrick may have been Peter's brother, and that Catherine may have been Bridget's sister.
Patrick's father was named as Owen and Catherine's as Daniel.

Can anybody find any trace of a marriage for Peter and Bridget? Or find them with siblings, or their father's?

Thanks
Sue

A Peter Collins can be found in the 1851 Census lodging with a family called Stephenson, reference HO107; piece 2389; folio 422; page 65.

He is described as aged 17 years; unmarried; born Ireland; occupation coal miner

This would suggest that he did marry in County Durham

No match for Bridget in Durham in 1851.  Unless she came to Durham between 1851-1859 they could have married in Ireland
