Late and Formerly on a Birth Certficate
« on: Monday 12 September 22 16:55 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have inherited my late aunt's family tree documents and I am confused over a document.

I am hoping that someone could shed some light on my question please?

I have a birth certificate for George Thomas Burrows from 13th January 1867 St. James, County of Middlesex which lists his mother as Caroline Burrows late Keats formerly Smith (father George Burrows)

Keats is a new surname to me and I would expect this to be a first / former husband but, we also have a birth certificate for a George Ebenezer Keats from 14th February 1876 St. James, County of Middlesex which is 9 years after Burrows and states mother as Caroline Keats formerly Burrows (Father John Keats)

Have we interpreted the information wrong or could the information on the Burrows birth certificate be a transcription error or error by Caroline when the birth of George Thomas was given?

Any help would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

I could be very wrong about this (not unknown):

There is a marriage December quarter 1864 - Clerkenwell - George Burrows and Caroline Smith appear on the same page.

I am assuming that Caroline had been previously married to ?? Keats.

There is a marriage September quarter 1844 - Taunton - Charles Smith and Caroline Keats.

Ermmmmmm  A long gap between 1844 and 1867!!!!  :-\ :-\

Hi, thank you the marriage record for George Burrows and Caroline Smith is the correct one.

What has confused us is the 'late' Keats but, she appears on a later birth certificate naming Keats as the father nd stating formerly Burrows......very odd

Have you got a copy of the marriage certificate?

Image on Ancestry - 25 December 1864 -St John, Clerkenwell

George Burrows - full age, bachelor - Labourer.  Father:  James, General Dealer
Caroline Smith - full age, spinster - Charwoman.  Father:  William, Shoemaker

So, perhaps not that couple!!

Is this the family in 1871 with children named Keats from a previous marriage?  They are transcribed as Keck but it looks like Keats on the original - living at Eagle Place, St James Clerkenwell, Holborn

George   Burrows   Head  37      Middlesex, England
Caroline   Burrows   Wife 48   Northamptonshire, England
Charles   Keck   Son 19   London, Middlesex, England
James   Keck   Son 19   London, Middlesex, England
Caroline   Keck   Daughter 13 London, Middlesex, England
Eliza   Keck   Daughter 9 Middlesex, England
George   Burrows   Son   4 Middlesex, England

Hi, not that we have found as yet. we believe this to be the correct record based on what we already had.

It appears that Caroline was with a Keats prior to marrying George Burrows based on Kay99's census excert on here (we had just found a print of this oin the paperwork from my aunt as well)

Our assumption is that George Ebenezer born to Caroline and John Keats was a brother / relation to the previous Keats marriage.

Thank you for your help  :)

Hi Kay,

Thank you, we have just found a printout in my late aunt's paperwork supporting this so it looks like there was a relationship with a Keats before and after George Thomas Burrows.

Thank you for your help :)

* birth certificate for George Thomas Burrows from 13th January 1867 St. James, County of Middlesex which lists his mother as Caroline Burrows late Keats formerly Smith (father George Burrows)

* birth certificate for a George Ebenezer Keats from 14th February 1876 St. James, County of Middlesex which is 9 years after Burrows and states mother as Caroline Keats formerly Burrows (Father John Keats)

From each of these certificates can you please give the date and place of birth, date and place of registration, and name of informant.
