Name appears on census sample but can't find on census?
« on: Thursday 15 September 22 11:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find the details of ELLIS SEDMAN in the 1851 census using Ancestry.

She IS there...
She appears mis-transcribed as "Alice Sidman" in the census sample.
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/797893:7918?ssrc=pt&tid=984964&pid=25127326808
The address is Bedford Place, Scarborough, Yorkshire.
The birthdate (1833) and place (Burniston/Burneston) are correct.
But if I search the 1851 using Ancestry for either of Ellis Sedman or Alice Sidman she doesn't show.
Why?

Can anyone please give me a link to her in the census?

HO107/2338 folio 146, page 34

Head of household is Jane Frankland.  Surname has been transcribed as LEDMAN

ADDED:  Apologies - should read HO107/2368 folio 146, page 34
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Beat me to it, yes transcribed as LEDMAN.

If you search the 1851 census leaving name blank with just year of birth 1834 (as this is what it says in the sample) and birth place Burneston, at Scarborough (all "exact"), it comes up.  :D

Thanks, all - I now have her.
I didn't try the "Ledman" variation simply because she was "Sidman" in the sample.
D'oh!

FindMyPast have her surname as SEDMAN - for those interested.
