1861 census help!
« on: Friday 16 September 22 11:54 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me locate an 1861 census record for my ancestor Mary McGovern?

She was born in Liverpool around 1819, the daughter of John McGowan. There is a baptism record for a Mary McGowan on 21 Mar 1819 in Liverpool, the daughter of Mary and John McGowan (naval officer), this seems to fit.

By 1841, she was living with Michael McGovern, under his surname though she wasn't married. They wed on 16 December 1845, and Michael was listed as a widow, I think his earlier two children may have been from this first marriage, as there is a big gap between the second and third child, but I have found no evidence to suggest who he was married to before.
Their children were

Thomas, born c. 1833
James, born c. 1835  - not sure whether they are Mary's biological children, but certainly Michael's.

John, born 1841
Lawrence, born 21 Nov 1842
Martin, born 11 Nov 1844
Peter, born c. 1852

1841 census:
Graham Place, Fontenoy Street
Michael McGovern   30   Labourer   Ireland
Mary do   20            born in county
Thomas do   8            born in county
James do   6            born in county
John do    5 mo            born in county

1851 census:
Cellar, 13 Trueman Street
Michl McGovern   Head   Married   45   Warehouse Porter   Ireland
Mary do      Wife    Married   32            Liverpool
Tho do         Son   Un      14   shop boy      do
James do      Son   Un      12   scholar         do
John do         Son   Un      11   do         do
Lawrence do      Son   Un      8   do         do
Martin do      Son   Un      6   do         do

Mary was widowed in January 1859, when her husband died at 80 FREEMASONS ROW, which was their home address.

1861 census - ?

1871 census:
7 Court Leeds Street
Mary McGovern   Head    Widow      53   charwoman      Liverpool
Lawrence do      Son   Un      28   Dock labourer      do
Peter do      Son   Un      19   do         do

1881 census:
14 Court 2 House Naylor Street
Mary McGovern   Head    Widow      62            Liverpool
William Meekin      Lodger   Un      42   Labourer      do
                  Boarder

1891 census:
1 Court 3 House Rose Place
Mary McGovern   Head    Widow      72   News vendor hawker   Liverpool
John do         Son   do      48   Cotton porter (dock)   do
She shared this house with her other son (Martin) and his family, but was classed as a separate household.

Her son, John, died in 1893, and Mary herself in 1895. Martin died in 1911. I'm not sure what happened to the others.

I have found a few Mary McGovern's and Mary McGowan's in Liverpool in 1861, none of them seem to fit, though.  :(

Any help will be much appreciated, thank you! :)

From National Archives entry no 10

Missing from 1861 census

There are some pages missing from all censuses, but 1861 has suffered most.

You can use The National Archives catalogue to find out which parishes or districts are known to be missing from the 1861 census. Use the keyword ‘missing’ to search within series RG 9 in our catalogue.

https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

I just googled;
is the 1861 liverpool census missing in england

Others may know more

Trish :)

Hello
Can't immediately see the 1861 census but in 1870 the family enter the workhouse
Peter Mcgovern 18 3rd Aug 1870 12 Upper Milk st dischard 13 Aug 1870 fever ward
Mary 51 same Roman Catholic fever ward discharged 27 Aug 1870
Lawrence 28 same discharged 25th Aug 1870 fever ward

Peter was also there on the 4th July again from 12 Upper Milk St
His baptism was at St mary 11.1.1852 born 25 Dec but no address .Gpt John Cassidy and Elizabeth McGovern.
(8 Aug 1885 admitted to Workhouse  with injury to his back and seems to have died Dec qtr.Wife Sarah  ,carter at Rose Place)

Lawrence entered Workhouse on his own 30 Oct 1868 Age 26 left the medical ward 8.5.1869 infirm.
5 Jan 1871 carter age 29 single 5/5/Leed St medical ward
24 Jan 1871 from5 Leeds St  medical agian until 31 st Jan 1871
5 Jan 1881 chronic bronchitus  8/14 Naylor St.Discharged 9 April
(Back again 1888 with caridac trouble and he seems to have died of it 29 Nov 1888 next of Kin mother Mary Bent St)

There are possible entries which could be them on the 1861 census in the Workhouse. At the time only intials were given so it is difficult to tell but it would fit with her husbands death.

Thank you Cathy!! Looking at the original record, it does clearly say Margt., but I still think this is the correct family. The order of names and their address make it likely, I think, that this is the correct family.

Thank you so much! :)

Thank you for the information Ciderdrinker! This is the correct family! It seems some infectious disease spread through the family in 1870. A quick google search shows an epidemic of Relapsing Fever in Liverpool in 1870, and a smallpox epidemic from 1870-72, though that was more concentrated in 1871 I think. Interesting, nonetheless. Thank you again. :)
