Marriage look up plz
« on: Sunday 18 September 22 08:55 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm looking for the marriage of James Johnston (born 1827) to Helen (or Ellen) Rutherford. They  had there first child in 1850.  Wishing to find the marriage record which will show there parents names.
Thank you

Hello,

If they married prior to the start of Civil Registration in Scotland ( 1 Jan 1855) then there may or may not be an Old Parish Record (OPR) of their marriage, the record simply may not have survived,  or may be irregular or may not have been Established Church of Scotland (be nonconfomist).  Records can be sparse. Even if a record is found, you are unlikely to to find the parents names.

Were they the couple  in Bladnoch Village, Wigown 1861? Son John born abt 1850/51 in Kells, kirkcudbrighshire. Mother Helen born abt 1833 Parton,Kirkcudbrighshire  ( if so, wondering - what is the connect to Dumfrieshire where this topic is posted)

If the Wigtownsh. family is right: , your first best bet is to purchase the Birth Cert of daughter
Mary Johnston, born 21 May 1855, Wigtown
Father: James Johnston and Mother Helen Rutherford

There is extra information on 1855 Births, including information on Parents Marriage, parents birthplaces and other children of the couple.

Aside from this, if James and Ellen/Helen died in Scotland after 1855, their death records should state their parent's names ( if the informant knew them). Also, the Scottish naming pattern can be applied to their children - to see if that has clues.

Cheers

In 1901 census for Annan, James Johnstone, born abt 1828 Gretna, is living with his sister Jane's family.

James's death certificate in Annan 1906 shows his mother's maiden name as TAIT.

Marriage :
JOHN JOHNSTONE to  ISABELLA TAIT
28/01/1827, Annan

ADDED-
James’ sister Jane JOHNSTON married Joseph LAURIE in Annan in 1873. The marriage certificate would give her parents names.

If your couple are the ones in Bladnoch Village 1861.....
Their youngest is Annie Johnstone, 4 mths, b Bladnoch

In 1871 Census , it looks like she is at the home of her Aunt Annie Brydson b Parton Kirkudbright, wife of William Brydson.

William Brydson and Annie Rutherford married 1859, Wigtown - after the start of Civil Registration. So the marriage should show her parents names.+

You can (& should) ask a Mod to close posts to replies on posts with least info. & direct people to one thread only of your own choice or theirs as 3 threads is a bit of a run-around & not needed.

I'd suggest with the amount of info. already given here, you make this the thread for replies.
