ohn Hane born 28 July 1620 St Giles, Reading, Berkshire, married Chrian
« on: Monday 19 September 22 08:46 BST (UK) »
Kia ora

I am looking for the birth of the first five children that John and chrian had.  Plus their marriage details
I know of the existence of these first five because they appear in his will which I have.  I am not sure where I got the birth dates of the last three.

John Hane born 28 July 1620 St Giles, Reading, Berkshire, married Chrian and they had eight children: John Haynes, Francis Haynes, Martha Haynes, Thomas Haynes, William Haynes, Anna Haynes 24 April 1640, Elizabeth Haynes 1 January 1642, Charles Haynes 15 November 1643. All christened at St Giles, Reading.
John Hains a gentleman of Englefeild died 22 August 1691 Berkshire.

Any help appreciated

Hi Bronwen,

I can see where you got the baptism dates of Anna and Charles:

NAME: Anna Haynes
GENDER: Female
BAPTISM DATE:   24 Apr 1640
BAPTISM PLACE: St Giles, Reading, Berkshire

NAME: Charles Haynes
GENDER: Male
BAPTISM DATE: 15 Nov 1643
BAPTISM PLACE: St Giles,Reading,Berkshire,England
FATHER: H. Haynes (can't see the image so could be mistranscribed).

Neither baptism has the father's full name or the mother's.

You state that the first five are mentioned in John's will; is it possible that the last 3 are not his children? I'm just wondering where you got their names from, as their baptism records don't mention a John or a Chrian.

Also, why do you think the children were baptised at St. Giles? Englefield had its own parish records; there are quite a few Haynes mentioned within them.

What exactly does his will say? Does he give the married name of Martha, his daughter? I'm assuming Chrian is mentioned by name in his will?

Hi Queenie

No Chrian is not mentioned in his will.  I have no idea where I got that from.  I need to hang on to an Elizabeth, perhaps not this one as that is the person I am following.
Richard Moore (1640c) married Elizabeth Haynes (1642) 26 December 1664 By Banns St Laurence, Reading.  The will has Elizabeth as Elizabeth Haynes so given she was married, perhaps not her?

There is a Martha Haynes who married Henry Childe 30 January 1686, St George's chapel, New windsor.  And a Francis Haynes who married Frances Pretty at the same venue in 1689.
But it looks likely that Martha's name after marriage was Awberry.  I only found one Awberry marriage in Freereg but it wasn't her.

Many thanks

Hi Bronwen,

I have looked at the will and I agree that the Elizabeth Haynes who married Richard Moore in 1664 at St. Laurence, Reading is not the daughter of John Haynes of Englefield (d.1691). I have done some research on this John and have pieced together the following:

John Haynes of Englefield married Martha Browne of Bradfield on 16 May 1655 in St Laurence, Reading.
Together they had:
- A son called John, who is probably the John who was baptised on 14 September 1656 in Bradfield, Berkshire, which was Martha's home parish.
- A daughter called Martha, who married Reynold Awbrey on 15 April 1680 in St Peter, Ufton Nervet, Berkshire. I cannot see any Haynes baptisms in Englefield before 1666, but she must have been born before then.
- A son called Francis, who was baptised on 1 April 1666 in Englefield.
- A son called William in 1667, who must have died before 1691.
- A daughter called Mary in 1671, who also must have died before 1691.
- A daughter called Elizabeth in 1673, who was baptised on 21 Aug 1673 in Englefield and who must be the Elizabeth mentioned in the will. She was only 18 when her father passed, which explains why she was unmarried.

There is an Elizabeth Hane or Hand (I cannot see the image, only the transcription) baptised on 1 Jan 1642 at St. Giles, Reading to John & Chrian (probably short for Christian or Christina), which must be where you got the names from.

Many many thanks for all of that.  It certainly appears that I have been trying to fit the wrong Haynes family into my Picture.  A bit of a shame given I have that lovely will and even more interestingly the inventory.  I shall pursue the John and Chrian and try and find more on that.

Once again, thanks for putting me on to the right track.
