NSW marriage - multiple results in index
« on: Sunday 09 October 22 03:32 BST (UK) »
A search for the marriage of Charles Thomas Oliver in 1939 in NSW gave 3 results:

16264/1939 OLIVER CHARLES THOMAS BATTLE THELMA ENID COULSEN PENRITH
16264/1939 OLIVER CHARLES THOMAS BOTTLE THELMA ENID PENRITH
16264/1939 OLIVER CHARLES THOMAS COULSEN THELMA ENID PENRITH

I was delighted to find these entries as Enid Coulson has been a longstanding brick wall. It seems the marriage certificate has been altered/amended at some stage. Would the certificate have additional information to explain these alterations?

I doubt if it has been amended, the multiple indexing would be because the information on the registration cannot be clearly interpreted.  The first two would be indexed twice because they weren't sure if it was an 'A' or an 'O',  and the COULSEN/BATTLE may be because she was 'also known as' or 'alias' one or the other.  I don't think they do multiple indexing for both maiden and previous married names so it probably wouldn't be that.

Thanks Dundee. She was born Enid Coulson - it seems she was adopted by the Battles. Thank goodness the Indexer was so thorough - or confused! I never would have found her otherwise. :-)

The surname she uses, and those with whom she shares an address, is BOTTLE.

Thanks Sue, I managed to track down her adoptive parents as well. I'll send for her marriage and death certicates - she died aged 90 and is buried in St Mary's Penrith. It all fits :-)
