Hi
John Thomas Arnell went to fight in WW1  & in 1918 (10th of June)his wife Mary Jane & daughter Clotilda made a Photo PC. Did wives send PC's to husbands on active duty?
(Our GGF James Robson kept a photo in his wallet & carried it on active service )
WW1 records for John Thomas have been lost & not handed down.  The family was extended on his return  so if he had a war injury it did not deter him from living out his life (d 1956 aged 74)
Many records were lost . Any help appreciated .
Thanks
Bill B
PS Clotilda was b 1907 so her naming is not related to WW1

Ta Neale,
Our folks lived in Wardley, Felling, Windy Nook & it is hard to split them. The disability give his d o b as 1880. I guess the enlistment forms were destroyed in WW2 , Those would give his next of kin.
Did you go in Fold3 or Western Front Assoc?
I wonder where 22/60 went? They were linked to Northumberland Fusiliers

it is possible that this was the date he gave when he enlisted. I could see no surviving records.

Did you go in Fold3 or Western Front Assoc?
Available from either.

I assume that "1st G. B" on medal roll indicates he was with the 1st Garrison Battalion which was in Malta for the entire war. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will come along.

Find My past hold the following transcription under 'British Army, Northumberland Fusiliers 1881-1920'

Name: John Thomas Arnell
Address: Dee Square, Felling
Enlistment year: 1881-1920
Service No:22/60
Rank: Private
Battalion: 22nd
Transfer to/from: To 1st Garrison Battalion

As far as I can make out the 1st Garrison Battalion was formed in August 1915 and then sent to the island of Malta on Garrison duties. It was disbanded in India on 4 March 1920.

His pension card as held by the Western Front association shows his disabilities as:

1. Debility -- attributable by Service
2. Deafness -- aggravated by Service

His degree of debility was initially assessed as being at 20% but then reassessed at between 15 and 19%

Wow Allen & Neale.
Kind of odd that JT was assessed as being a bit deaf on Malta.
He was a miner - Hewer so I dare say there would be a lot of noise down the mine.
Oddly enough Dees Square was probably more unhealthy for the family. Several family members lived there  & a few died in tragic circumstances. Child birth fatalities seemed high & the area was cleared in 1930s
I wonder why you have to pay extra for UK info in fold 3? It is part on Ancestry.
Thanks for your help guys

Yes it is part of Ancestry but Ancestry always charges it's UK customers for extra databases like this. I access the pension records as a member of the western Front Association, my membership cost to the WFA is a lot less than paying Ancestry the extra to access the cards via Fold3.

I'm just clicking on Ancestry to take in the records & s th odd has occurred
On the WW1 Medal Roll Index Cards 1914-20
I saw" John Thomas Arnell served in the military in 1914 in Walls, Orkney, when he was 32 years old."
Odd. Is it poss before Malta?
