My 3x great grandmother turned up in Essex, England in the 1830s!
« on: Thursday 20 October 22 21:14 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm here on the Kerry board because all the arrows are pointing at Killarney, Kerry, for tracing my GGG grandmothers life. Her name was Johanna Donoghue, the spelling varies of course. She married William Page in Grays, Essex in 1838 and she is Johanna Donnoway on the marriage certificate. Father's name is Dennis Donnoway on the certificate, his occupation is 'sailor'. All her English censuses say she was born in Ireland. She died in 1883. My nan told me she had an Irish great grandmother so the records confirm this.

However, while there is plenty on her life from her marriage in 1838, its what happened before thats a mystery. I've been trawling through baptismal records and looking through DNA matches family trees on Ancestry and My Heritage (they are usually 5th to 8th cousins) and the names that come up are Sullivan, O' Donoghue, Donoghue and Crone. I am guessing Donnoway was an anglicisation when she arrived in England. Also everything seems to be pointing to the Killarney region of Kerry in terms of DNA matches with other people, cross referencing family trees back to the 19th century.

I'm keen to try and piece the puzzle together, especially her story and how she ended up in Grays in Essex.

Thanks in advance!

Miranda

Welcome to RootsChat!

To start this off, the mother's maiden name on the children's birth certificates varies quite extremely, but Johanna appears to have gone mostly by 'Donovan':

Her year of birth seems to have been c.1811-1815. I did a search for you on irishgenealogy.ie, the site that holds the parish records for Kerry, but nothing obvious turned up. Unfortunately, from my experience of Kerry parish registers, it is often the case that there is no baptism record to be found when researching this far back; it is very much dependent on the parish. I have ancestors who were born in the 1830s in Kerry whose baptism records I cannot find.

Of these DNA matches you have, do they share any common ancestors? A particular Donoghue couple that they have in common?

Maybe someone else will have some other ideas.

There are two Denis Donoghue is the Tithe records.
One near Killarney and the other a lot further south.
