Hunts in Barnstaple
« on: Saturday 22 October 22 08:44 BST (UK) »
I'm wondering if there are any Hunts here with Hunt ancestors in Barnstaple. I've shared my family research info (so far) with my Hunt brothers who both live in Devon and they are really excited by my Barnstaple findings, although there is much still to discover, I am sure!
I have:-
John Dennis Hunt (and Margaret Harry) Ironmonger [Abt 1777-1855] Ironmonger (my 3x gt grandfather)
John Hunt 12, Joy Street, Silversmith and Watchmaker (2xgt grandfather) and Mary Ann Parnell.
William Hunt, Ironmonger 35&36 High Street.(Abt 1807-1897)

I did ask a question about my Hunt ancestors 10 years ago and had a lot of helpful responses, for which I was most grateful.  I'm asking again after all this time as it might be read by someone new. If anyone has these in their family ancestry I'd be fascinated to learn more.
Many thanks for reading,

Hi Kate
Not my family but always happy to help.
There is a baptism at Barnstaple for
John Dennis Hunt 7 Sep 1777 s of William and Dorothy.

William Hunt married Dorothy Dennis at Barnstaple 17 June 1776 .So John's middle name was after his mother.
Other child -William 28 Feb 1779 (probably apprenticed to James Chamberlain cabinet maker 1794)

Possible baptism for William Senr s of John and Elizabeth 17.6.1753.
(other possible child John bapt 5.3.1749/50 at Barnstaple Independent chapel father a barber.)

Dorothy Dennis bapt 25.10.1753  d of John and Mary Dennis. (John was the local Blacksmith).

Struggling to find their burials.

ps Hunt burials in Barnstaple
John Hunt 20 Jan 1756 and Elizabeth 2.3.1760
William 29.5.1792
Not saying they are yours of course.

There are also 2 Wills for a John Dennis of Barnstaple 1824 and 1826 .(I'm assuming the 1826 one is yours and the 1824 is Dorothy's brother whose baptism I can't see.)
The 1826  fit a burial 1739 -2.2.1826 and the other is 1755-15.5.1824.
While their Wills may not have survived ,both were liable for Death duty and those records have survived at Devon archives. They should give you more information.
While you're there there is also Thomas Harry 1812.

Thank you for all this information Ciderdrinker.
I have a few of these names and dates but you have unearthed some extra interesting ones for me and it'll take a little time to compare them to what I have.  Some of the baptism and death dates are very helpful and I'll look into those further. The Will information is also interesting so thank you.
