That is almost word for word what I said on the telephone to Ancestry and I still didn't get an offer on Annual Worldwide.
So I paid up and felt aggrieved.

You should have politely declined, saying you would need to think about it, and tried again a couple of days later. You would probably have spoken to a different person and may have got a different result.

Might it be possible that operators have a quota of discounts that they are allowed to give per day or week?  That might explain the differing results.  Just a thought.

Just spoke with someone on live chat at Ancestry and got 25% discount on my renewal (Worldwide 12 months)…..it’s not due until next month and advised to contact them nearer the time to see if they can help reduce it further!

Oh, I wish I could find similar.
One thing I've thought of: if you simply lapse / leave Ancestry, what happens to your tree(s) on there? Do they vanish, 9or become public?

No, when I've let my subscription lapse, my trees stay exactly as I've left them, still private. You can still add to and edit your trees. You can't, however, see the Ancestry records you've attached to your tree, so it's a good idea to always download or save records to your computer.

Also, I've just bumped up a post with an offer that might still be valid.
