Hello Rootschatters

Does anybody have any inside information on when the 1921 Scottish Census will be released ?

It was to be late summer then the latter part of the year.

We’re now in November and I’m champing for a few a few brick walls to crumble an it’s release.

No-one knows, except at ScotlandsPeople.  As you say, it was promised for later in 2022 - but who knows what the issue might be, or how long it might take.  They'll have to say SOMETHING soon.

Thank you for contacting ScotlandsPeople.
Our preparations for publication of the 1921 census were unavoidably delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Restrictions put in place to ensure staff and customer safety, in line with Scottish Government advice, meant that we had been unable to access the 1921 images that are held securely on-site or the related reference material. We are now working on the publication project as a high priority but the 1921 Census contains more than four million individual records held on 200,000 digital images. Publication of such a large record set is highly complex and time consuming, requiring manual transcription, indexing and extensive quality assurance.
This work is currently taking place and we plan to publish images of the 1921 Scottish Census on scotlandspeople.gov.uk as soon as we can. Unfortunately, we cannot be any more specific than this at present but will provide further updates when we can via our website and social media channels.

Covid 19 is such an easy excuse. Surely they have always known how many records were involved and would have been working on this since the release of the 1911 census?

The 1921 census for Scotland was released on ScotlandsPeople, the pay-per-view website of the National Records of Scotland, on 30 November 2022.
