1861 Census
« on: Tuesday 22 November 22 23:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I have been looking at my great grandfather's first wife's family, he was a witness to her sisters marriage in April 1862 and married in December 1862, but I can't find his wife and her sister anywhere in 1861?

Sarah Hannah Wilson born 1836 in Oldham and Elizabeth Harper born 1842, tho she didn't use the Harper part.
Sarah H died unmarried in 1863 aged 28 , she and sister Matilda had themselves baptised in 1856 after their father died. Their brothers emigrated to New Orleans and all died in a yellow fever outbreak in 1858.
They've got me stumped.
Thank you

Haven't found them yet, but just in case it helps - Sarah and Matilda give their address in 1856 (on their baptism) as "Scholesfold, Maygate Lane".

Hi

There were lots of missing records on the 1861 census.

This link gives details but you will have to scroll down to the relevant census:

I wonder if this is Sarah  :-\

Sarah A WILSON (transcribed as WILLIAN)  25  (cotton operative[?])  Oldham  - boarder at Connor St (I think)
RG9/3014/60 pg8

(Comberton types quicker than me) and yes, it probably is Cannon St.

Thank you, yes that is Sarah at Cannon Street, so she wasn't with Elizabeth, just her missing now, I thought they would be together.  Sarah was buried at Leesfield with Matilda's husband William Rollitt and their 3 children.  Elizabeth was married at Ashton under Lyne in December 1862 and the first child was born at Lum Droylesden in 1863, don't know why she would go there?
