Look up Request for Vere Herbert Smith Buried Llandevenny Churchyard
« on: Thursday 24 November 22 14:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I would welcome a look up please at this church as I was at a funeral there years ago and noticed in the cemetry a headstone for
Vere Herbert Smith at the time I didn't take the headstone details down as it would have been a bit awkward at the funeral.   I'm sure this Vere Herbert Smith is an ancestor.

I would really appreciate the details on the headstone and any other information relating to Vere Herbert Smith.

Thanks

Elizlloyd

There is a family tree on My Heritage for a Vere Herbert Smith, this may not be her but you might recognise a date, or know it's definitely not her.
Most of the siblings and children for her are private but this is what I can see:
Born: 15th July 1805   Abergavenny, Monmouthshire
Died: 1860 in Monmouthshire
Parents: John Smith (1763-1825) and Elizabeth James (1779-1857)
The one non-private sibling: James Herbert Smith (1819-1891)
The one non-private daughter: Sarah Smith (1840-1840)
His wife's maiden name is down as: THOMAS
Sorry if this is not him, but if it is I will have a look for birth/census records for you  :)

There are a lot of mentions of ''Vere Herbert Smith'' in the papers, regarding his ''large fortune'' and also his estate ''The Great Hill House'', probably ''The Great Hill'' mentioned in his Will record.

From what I can see on a tree on Ancestry, it has Vere Herbert Smith's parents being Elizabeth James and Vere Herbert Smith. So the John Smith I said before may not be correct for his father.

Also not sure if his wife's maiden name was ''THOMAS'' as it said on the My Heritage Tree. There is a marriage for a Vere Herbert SMITH to a Jane DAVIES on Dec 20 1830 in Llangatwg, Residence: Abergavenny. I think Jane Davies' dad is stated as: David DAVIES.
There are quite a few witnesses and I can't make out all of their names but I think I can see: Daniel James, Rebecca Davies, Edmund William Davies, Caroline Davies. Although that is not all of the words in the ''In the Presence of'' lines so you might have to double check this.

If Vere Herbert Smith married Jane Davies, it looks like they had a son called ''Vere Herbert Smith'' in 1833, baptism date: 15th Dec 1833 in Llangattock, Brecon, Wales. Father is given as: Vere Herbert Smith and mother as Jane.

Baptism for Vere Herbert Smith's brother James Herbert Smith:
Birth Date: -------
Baptism Date: 28 March 1819
Place: Abergavenny, St Mary
Fathers First Name: Vere Herbert Smith
Mothers First Name: Elizabeth Smith
Fathers Occ: Draper

There is a baptism for a ''Herbert Smith'', who I think might be Vere Herbert Smith.
Baptism Date: 15 July 1805
Place: Abergavenny, St Mary
Fathers first name: Vere Herbert Smith
Mothers first name: Elizabeth Smith

Possible sister for Vere Herbert Smith and James Herbert Smith:
-Anne Smith
Baptism Date: 25 May 1807
Place: Abergavenny, St Mary
Fathers first name: Vere
Mothers first name: Elizabeth

Possible Brother for Vere Herbert Smith, James Herbert Smith and Anne Smith:
-Henry Smith
Baptism Date: 02 June 1815
Place: Abergavenny, St Mary
Fathers First name: Vere Herbert Smith
Mothers First name: Elizabeth Smith
Fathers occupation: ''Mercer''? (Merchant)

Possible brother for Vere, James, Anne and Henry:
-Thomas Smith
Baptism Date: 1817
Place: Abergavenny, St Mary
Fathers First Name: Vere Herbert Smith
Mothers First Name: Elizabeth Smith
Fathers Occupation: Draper
Abode: ''High Street''?

Possible brother for Vere, James, Anne, Henry and Thomas:
-William Smith
Baptism Date: 09 Aug 1813
Place: Abergavenny, St Mary
Fathers First name: Vere Herbert Smith
Mothers First name: Elizabeth Smith
Fathers Occupation: Mercer
Abode: High Street

Possible sister for Vere, James, Anne, Henry, Thomas and William:
-Elizabeth Smith
Baptism Date: 02 June 1803
Place: Abergavenny, St Mary
Fathers first name: Vere Herbert Smith
Mothers first name: Elizabeth

Vere's parents marriage:
Groom: Vere Herbert Smith (senior)
Marriage Date: 16th May 1799
Place: Llangwm
Bride: Elizabeth James
Brides Parish: Llangwm
Grooms Parsih: Abergavenny

overall:
I think Vere Herbert Smith was born in 1805 and died in 1860. His parents I think were another Vere Herbert Smith and his mother was Elizabeth James, his siblings: James Herbert Smith, Anne Smith, Henry Smith, Thomas Smith, William Smith and Elizabeth Smith. I think Vere Herbert Smith married Jane Davies and had a son also called Vere Jane Smith in 1833, but another tree has his wife's maiden name as ''Thomas''.

(sorry if this isn't your Vere Smith!! There are other Vere Herbert Smith's including his Dad and Son, but I think his son moved to England, possibly his Dad's grave though.)

Hm, I see. Maybe 1860 was the death of his Dad then?
