Have now found that he was SSM instructor with Army for 7 years before going overseas.  Tomorrow I willlook for his actual enlistment.

Am I correct in thinking   AASC  stands ofr Australian Army Staff College - just guessing.

No, I think he was in the Australian Army Service Corps (it didn't get its 'Royal' prefix until 1948). It was equivalent to the British Army's ASC.
In any case, a lieutenant would have been too junior to attend staff college - that's normally for majors and above.

He was made up to Leiutenant as he was about to depart overseas.
