Albert Jules POSTELL - Industrial School, St. Martin's
« on: Wednesday 30 November 22 19:49 GMT (UK) »
Hoping someone might do a look-up for me.

I'm researching WW1 soldiers and have come across Albert Jules Postell born 1877 in Southwark, London/Surrey.  Albert is listed on the 1891 census as an 'inmate' at the Industrial School.  I'm assuming that his parents died and he was sent to Jersey.  I've not come across a London child being sent to the Channel Islands before.  Was this common?  Is anyone able to check the online records for the School please?

At a guess there's a Jersey connection that means either the family has gone back before he was in the school, or Albert was deemed by London poor law administrators as not having a sufficient connection to the London parish but did to Jersey and was returned there

I found this Jersey family in 1861 which be of interest, given the names. All born France. Also there in 1871 - wife Victoire

Jules Postel   35
Joisine Postel   30    Wife
Adalbert Postel    12    Son

Bingo - the wife's name matches Albert Jules' mother's name on he GRO birth registration register

Marriage:    22 Mar 1873     St Saviour, Jersey

Adalbert Postel
Age:    24
Father:    Jules Postel

Harriet Susan Stephens
Age: 23
Father: John Francis Stephens

There's a daughter Harriet Victoire b c 1873. She's working as a servant in Jersey in 1891. She  marries in Seaforth, Liverpool  in 1897. There's a later immigration for Albert Jules from Brazil in 1916, heading to Cheshire

According to the admission document Albert was born 12 Oct 1876 and entered the Industrial School on 17 Aug 1885. His relatives are listed as a mother and a sister with his father seemingly already deceased. He left the school on 27 Mar 1893 now able to read and write and having been taught the trade of shoe making. Apparently he was apprenticed to a Mr Lucas (?) in Innisfail, Alberta, Canada which is quite unusual. His mother died on 20 Nov 1889.
