Whitwell and Sherburn House were extra-parochial places in County Durham (i.e. they did not belong to any parish). They both have Wikipedia pages:

His actual birth was registered Q/E Dec 1884 - Durham Registration District, Volume 10a, Page 421.

According to the GRO Index, his mother's maiden name was Smith.

However the only marriage I can see with a similar surname to Rowles in the County of Durham is in 1874 of a John ROW to a Mary ANN Smith.

Hence this birth may not be the correct one.

Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

I think the birth is the correct one.
The family appear in various Censuses and all the children have mmn Smith on the GRO ref. However John Rowles married Mary Jane Fretter Sep 1874 Dutham 10a 465.

In 1871 Mary J S Fretter is with parents Joseph Fretter and Jane nee Robson along with brothers John Smith Fretter and Joseph S Fretter. In 1881 Joseph is with John and Mary Jane listed as Joseph Smith brother in law.

I don't have a clue as to where or why the name Smith is used.

One more baptism at Sherburn Hospital:
George 21 Dec 1890, other details the same. George appears in the 1891 census entry for the family, age 0, but his death is recorded in Q2 1891.

Good finds Emeltom and Alan.

How VERY odd about the Smith maiden name. I wondered if Mary Jane had perhaps been 'adopted' by the Fretter family - but she wasn't. There is a birth for a Mary Jane Fretter.

Where is Hercule Poirot when you need need him?

I wonder if Joseph Fretter is also known as Smith? I can;t find him under the Fretter surname except for the marriage and 1871 census
