A female who makes hats for women is a "Milliner"

I don't know any other name for a man who makes hats for men, other than "Hatter", who worked in a Hattery.

"Mad as a Hatter" is linked to the hat-making industry and mercury poisoning. In the 18th and 19th centuries, industrial workers used a toxic substance, mercury nitrate, as part of the process of turning the fur of small animals, such as rabbits, into felt for hats.

The person I'm looking for is a William Shakespeare who was a Hatter by trade. The only one I can find in the censuses lives in Salford but the wrong age. Thankyou for all your replies.

There is a William Shakespeare listed under Hat Manufacturers in Devizes in 1830 Pigot's directory.

He's cropped up in a previous thread https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=485344
