James Doherty, Derry, Derry.
« on: Thursday 22 December 22 19:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I've been trying for a few years to find the birthplace of my great Grandparents James Doherty and Margaret Gallagher, thanks to the recent release of the Scottish 1921 Census I have discovered my G/Grandmothers place of birth is listed as Cornamucklagh County Monaghan, my G/Grandfathers place of birth is listed as Derry, Derry.
I'd like to find out what part of the city he was from but as he had a very common name for the north west I'm kinda stuck again for a birthplace.

His parents are listed on his Marriage cert (1879) in Glasgow as John Doherty, farmer, deceased, and Agnes O Donnell, formerly Doherty, Maiden name Doherty.

Any help or advice is appreciated.
                   Regards, John.

James was 20 and Margaret was 18 on their marriage cert in 1879.

Their births will pre-date civil registration which began in 1864 in Ireland for births and deaths, so religion will be important in finding a baptism.  Also, for his mother's death (perhaps after 1879 when they married), there many Agnes and even more Nancy Dohertys noted in the civil death records -- Nancy being a popular substitute for Agnes.

Thanks Eileen,
James was R.C. as far as i know, on his marriage cert he was married in Savoy street Glasgow, also on the cert it states "married according to the forms of the Roman Catholic church"

There is a baptism for a James Doherty on April 6, 1856, the son of John Doherty and Nancy Doherty in Maghera & Killylough in the Diocese of Derry.  This register is generally shown as showing the mother's maiden name so I'm confident that Doherty is her maiden name.  The townland is shown as Stranger (or something similar).  It might be Stranagard:

That's a fantastic find Eileen, Thanks very much for your time, hopefully it leads to more finds and i can  see an exact location for James' early life.

Hi Eileen,
I've had a better look at the baptism entry on my laptop, I think you're spot on with it, i can make out all the entry except for the female sponsor, Catherine ??, the male sponsor is John Doherty, I wonder if that is James' brother?the reason i'm wondering is the names James and John run through my family from myself and my brother James, my father was James and his brother was John, my Grandfather was James and he also had a brother named John, now my great grandfather James, did he also have a brother John?
It's hard to tell if the entry in the 1831 census for George Dougherty has a connection to James' family, there is no mention of the name George being passed down through the generations of Dohertys in Glasgow.
