James John Alecock born 27 Aug 1895 Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 27 December 22 15:35 GMT (UK) »
The above served in the R A O depot, Fulford Rd, York at 1921 and at his marriage 3 Aug 1918 he was recorded as a soldier.
His wife Laura nee Thomas had a child, Evelyn Marie recorded as Thomas born July 1918 and according to the 1921 Census she was born in Linz, Austria.
I'm wondering if James could have served in Austria? Also whether Laura could have been there too?

Hi,

Are you certain that Evelyn Marie Thomas was the daughter of Laura? Do you have personal knowledge of this? I'm just wondering because the 1921 census does not make it particularly clear whose child she is, just that she is a grandchild.

Evelyn is still living with her grandma, Fanny, in 1939, but James & Laura's daughters (Muriel & Doreen) are living with them in 1939.

I've no personal knowlege about Evelyn or Laura but just seems suspicious that Laura married James shortly after Evelyn's birth so wonderd if James was in Austria in 1918?

I think you are rather jumping things and Inventing History with this wild Theory that he was serving in Austria
When the Medal Card Indexes don't even show he was Ever in the Army
let alone Overseas in Austria
Probably Home in York
What was Laura Thomas doing in Austria during the War and having a Child out of Wedlock is the real Mystery
They did marry in York September Quarter 1918 Vol 9d page 68
They had Muriel in York September Quarter 1919 Vol 9d page 63 Mother's Maiden Name = Thomas
And Doreen in York June Quarter 1921 Vol 9d page 81 Mother's Maiden Name = Thomas

The 1921 index shows no birth place for Evelyn, if I am looking at the right child.

There is a baptism for Evelyn Thomas, born July 5th 1918 with parents Edwin and Marie.

The address is Colenso Street, York - the same address as several other records for the Thomas family.

Could ‘Linz’ be an error/corruption of Colenso Street?

I suppose I was clutching at straws really. In retrospect it seems unlikely that he'd have been in Austria towards the end of WW1. However he was recorded as a soldier at his marriage to Laura in 1918 and in 1921 he was in the RAOC. Presumably he would have served in WW1?

Agreed he would have been the Age to be in WW1 in York and still in the Army on 19 June 1921
Just that he never Went Overseas
Which is why he has no Medal Card Index

The 1921 shows Evelyn aged 2y 11m in Linz, Austria on my copy. There is another Evelyn aged 13y 1m born York and she was Laura's sister.

Heywood, thank you for the baptism record and it could be that Evelyn was the daughter of Edwin, Laura's brother.
Thank you ALAMO for the research.
