Harry Hill--Publican, Brighton
« on: Saturday 07 January 23 19:21 GMT (UK) »
According to the family story, my great-grandfather was at some time (1890??-1910??) "mine host" at the Queen's Head, adjacent to the railway station.

I have been unable to find any records to either confirm or refute this.

Can anybody help with any information?

Regards,

Hi,

Just to start, have you found your great-grandfather on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census? Where was he and what was his occupation?

A quick Google search tells me that the Queen's Head is located at 69 Queen's Road and I did have a look at the aforementioned census years for that address, but no sign of any Harry Hill on the premises. Obviously these are only snapshots of one particular day, with a gap of 10 years.

I also had a look through the newspaper archives, but no luck.

Queenie  :)

Apart from his name you haven’t given any details re birthyear or birthplace & there are a number of Harry Hill’s in Sussex

There is a 1901 entry for a Harry Hill b 1884 Southampton working as a potman/barman at 8 Montpelier Place Brighton

Thank you, Queenie & Carole W for your replies.

I had done the census search some years ago with negative results (hence age/occupation not really relevant) and should have mentioned that--my apologies!

I was hoping that someone might have access to brewery or other commercial directories for Brighton at around the time-span given.

From browsing the QH website it appears to be a free-house, but if it was owned by a brewery in that time-frame there may be company archives for me to contact.
