Henderson McCormick McLennan a wee nudge please
« on: Monday 09 January 23 15:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone a wee bit of help please trying to connect the family names to start with I have the only child out of 12 from Henry Henderson (1847) and Mary Ann McCormick (1853) not accounted for in death or marriage she is Margaret Henderson (1873) i have her birth then the 1881 census aged 8 then again in the 1891 census aged 17 both census in Bothwell Lanarkshire then nothing either in marriage or death or with family in preceding Census's. Jump to the 1921 census I have Mary Ann Henderson (McCormick 1853) widow of Henry (1847) with son Edward (1897) aged 23 last of documented children for Henry n Mary Ann then a Margaret McLennan aged 18 noted as Gran Daughter also a James Henderson aged 6 noted I think as adopted son and 2 boarders at the address which is 13 Park Street Cambuslang which all ties in accept i cant trace the birth of Margaret McLennan or James Henderson aged 6.
I have Margaret McLennan then marrying in 1922 to a Patrick Fowley her address is 13 Park St Cambuslang she states her parents as John McLennan (coal miner) and Sarah Henderson ? sadly Margaret Fowley (McLennan) dies in 1936 in Cambuslang but husband states her parents as Moses McLennan (coal miner deceased) and Margaret Henderson still living which makes me think that my missing Margaret Henderson (1873) could be the mother of Margaret Fowley (McLennan).
To add to the confusion I have a son of Henry (1847) and Mary Ann (McCormick 1853) who was supposed (he did not sail this time) to arrive in New York in 1923 a John Henderson who states a William McLennan as his nephew and address in New York but yet again I have no luck linking this William to the Henderson's............ I hope i have explained this OK as in my head it's a jumble any help in moving forward would be great for my sanity if not my wallet I have attached the relative snips of documents once again thanks in advance.

Hi garngad

So, Margaret's father Henry was a Coal miner?

Have you found the family's 1911 census entry to see who showed there?

Granddaughter Margaret McLennan in 1921, showed as 18 and 6 months and born in Cambuslang. So born very end of 1902 or beginning of 1903. The 1921 Census was on 19 June that year.

I have come across this birth entry that could fit for the two Margarets, mother and daughter?

Have you come across the address where the birth took place in any of the family's research?

From 1901, 10 Colebrooke Street in Cambuslang is multi-occupancy and a mining community going by the occupations of the heads of households.

The son William showing there in 1901.

There is a shipping manifest entry for him I think, arriving in NY on 4 Dec 1922 from Glasgow. Birth place given as Bellshill and father Moses McLennan given as contact back in Scotland. This could connect to the reference given by John Henderson who gave a William McLennan, newphew, as his US contact on arrival in NY in 1923 likely. William's marriage details in NY www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:247V-D3Z

Son Harry arrived in NY on 9 Aug 1923 from Glasgow. He gave his mother, Maggie McLennan as contact back in Scotland. Showing as living at 18 Monteith Street, Bridgeton.

He gave his father Moses, already resident in NY as his US contact. Moses McLennan must have arrived in this period of 1922-23 in NY.

Wonder if Maggie joined them? The McLennan boys stated they were applying for permanent residency.

Moses McLennan arrived in NY on 1 May 1923. He gave Maggie, his wife in Bridgeton, as his contact in Scotland. His US contact is William McLennan, his son. See www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JNQ9-5YH

We had from the 1901 McLennan household: Harry Mclennan 9 months b. Motherwell, Lanarkshire

I think this might be his birth reg:

Henry HENDERSON
1900
639 / 1149
Dalziel

I can't see a marriage for Maggie Henderson and Moses McLennan. Likely they didn't ever marry? Would explain why the births for their children would be under Henderson and just show mother's name (at least they were honest rather than including a ficticious marriage date and going under a married surname  ::)).

More research required though really.

Oh Monica many many many thanks it all comes together now (I had been searching on off for the past blur of years) the illegitimate births and non marriage is not the first for my mining Henderson's as I had one previous in Shettleston Glasgow then Slamannan where they where living as man and wife in common marriage in the mining community for the first 3 births of 7 children confusing me then but they then legally ? married in the sheriffs office Glasgow after the 3rd child.................... how i couldnt find Margaret though with her common husband named Moses was driving me crackers and I cant really express my gratitude for your time and expertize in helping me along I have been on the trail to America for this branch of my Henderson's and have had contact from a living relative 3rd cousin twice removed in his 70s who has furnished me with family pictures and now I think I can complete this Journey with him so once again Monica cheerz.
