Old place name in Carluke 1871
« on: Tuesday 10 January 23 14:57 GMT (UK) »
I have a copy of an old parish register birth in Carluke however I am unable to confirm (or otherwise) the exact location in Carluke - it looks like Westerkillargow but I can't find anything similar on a Google search.
I'm hoping someone out there can come up with the answer!
Many thanks.

James

What birthplace is shown for the person on the 1871/1881 censuses?

My apologies to all - was looking at a different document when I submitted this. The date should have read 1771 and not 1871. I don't believe there are any census records as he's thought to have died 1840.
It's definitely not Lesmahagow - the writing on the document is surprisingly good and clear - it certainly looks like Westerkillargow but it's just that I can't find any confirmation of it anywhere.
Again, apologies for wasting time.

Could it be West Kinkadzow (or Kilnkadzow)

Perhaps if you could post a screenshot of the section others may be able to assist.

Definitely not Kinkadzow - I'll crop the line from the document and post it on the Handwriting forum.

Thanks to all who made the effort.

Looking at the OPR's for Carluke there are several mentions of West Town of Kilcaigow

I think the place you are looking for may be Weston, a very small group of houses just to the west of Kilncadzow shown on the 1773 Charles Ross map dated 1773. ( https://maps.nls.uk/view/216390106).  Possibly previously identified by Falkyrn.

Exactly right Istrice. And, for those who may be interested, "Kilncadzow" is pronounced "Kill-caigie".
