Gloucestershire Parish Registers - COATES

Hi,

I have found my ancestors marriage - Elizabeth James, Marriage, 27 Aug 1769, Gloucester, St Mary De Crypt, Gloucestershire, England.  Parish as it appears Nortonin.  Spouse Daniel Coates

Based on that I try to search for Daniel Coates birth, by searching on 1748 +/- 10 years (my best guess at the "right" year range) then I get TWO entries that may be him.

In the 1700 all we have on a marriage entry on the parish records is the groom name and bride name, and the Parish.  We do not have the parent's names, so how do I work out which of these two are "my" Daniel Coates?

Daniel Coates, Baptism Date:   20 Sep 1747, Bisley, Gloucestershire, England
Daniel Coates, Baptism Date:   17 Jan 1742 Brockworth, Gloucestershire, England

 It is not obvious which are closer to the marriage location of Gloucester, St Mary De Crypt.

I am sorry if this is a stupid question but would much appreciate some pointers in how to work this out.

parents only appear from 1837 onwards.

Have you looked for the births of all their children please?

Sometimes the eldest son is named after the father's father (although that isn't cast in stone of course).
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

I have only just seen these replies.  Thank you magslote.  I did not know this.  So could be impossible to know which one is "my" Daniel Coates then?  :-(
