Hi
There is a marriage Holy Trinity South Shields 25 May 1869 or BMD June qtr 1860 10A 63 which is strange .
Thomas Augustus Rogers and Isabella Storey

If you get the full thing ,it should give a father.
He is buried at Westhoe Cemetery with wife Isabella Dockwray Storey which if there is a gravestone would give full date of birth.
Their child was baptised there Joseph Edward Dockwray  12 Aug 1866 born 22 nd July mariner
South Shields.

Children born South Shields -Louisa Ann Mar qtr 1864 ,Joseph Sep 1866,Mary Isabella Dec 1868,Thomas August Sep 1871 and  Sarah Dockwray Dec 1873.

Thank you.

On further research, the naturalization information for Isabella may have been because she became a German citizen due to her marriage . Apparently it was common for wives or widows to try and reclaim their lost British Citizenship in the WW1 period. see the following research paper, which specifically mentions Isabella and Thomas, although I am unable to see the whole thing

That’s a fascinating part-read, fiddlerslass! And makes so much sense.

Looks as though Thomas August was indeed German. I’ll now wait, impatiently, for their marriage certificate to arrive! :P

Hmm, the marriage certificate gives few hints. Nothing about his or his father’s nationality.

Thomas August Rogers, Seaman. 25 years old st time of marriage to Isabella Storey, who was 19.

His father was Thomas Rogers, grocer. Her father was Thomas Storey, keelman (as were a lot of my ancestors).

Witnesses were John Dockwray (Isabella’s uncle) and an Isabella Mary Rooke (who I don’t think is in my family tree).

Marriage was, indeed, at Holy Trinity Church.

Not a huge help, I don’t think …

This may not help you much but, never leave a stone unturned.

If the place name Pressen is correct then here it is:
https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/20513039

The parish hierarchy was:
Eilenburg – Behlitz – Pressen

The church books for Pressen (Eilenburg) are in the Town Archive in Delitzsch
Not online, as far as i can see

https://stadtarchiv-delitzsch.de/online-findmittel/archivalische-quellenlage-in-nordsachsen

This area does not belong to the Saxon State Church, but since 1816 to the Church Province of Saxony, based in Magdeburg.

This only helps you of course if you know the German name,

my search for Pressen showed these surnames
https://gedbas.genealogy.net/search/simple?placename=Pressen

The only name starting with Ro(e) was
https://gedbas.genealogy.net/person/show/1254725819

You´ve got to start somewhere

I’m getting the feeling my German ancestors are going to continue to elude me! Thank you for your input. I don’t know enough German to really understand the page you’ve kindly linked to, but if their stuff isn’t available online, it’s kind of immaterial anyway.

With no Thomas / Tomas listed, it feels like yet another dead end. As I said above, it’s starting to feel as though my German ancestors are going to continue to be elusive!
