Prussian ancestor help please
« on: Thursday 19 January 23 13:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello

My great grandfather is listed as “German (Prussia / Preußen), naturalised British. I’m really struggling to find any further information about him.

His name is Thomas Augustus Rogers, born 1837, died 1899 (death in South Shields, England)

I would very much like to know more information about this ancestor, when he came to England, and, ideally, his ancestors!

Many thanks for any pointers you might be able to throw my way; Ancestry Worldwide hasn’t helped me at all.

Welcome to Rootschat

His date of entry to England will probably be on his Naturalisation papers

His death reg shows his middle name as August - not Augustus - as does his 1860 marriage to Isabella Storey.

A tree on Ancestry shows his birthplace as Pressen, Nordsachsen, Saxony

Do you have his marriage cert?  What is his fathers name & occupation?

It's possible his name was "Anglicised"

You may find clues about him from the census. Which was the first census he appeared on, where he was born, who he was living with etc.

Surname could have been anglicised to Rogers.

Aah, I wonder if his mother went on a trip with his father, and just gave birth in Prussia?!

I’ll follow all your hints later.

I think sometimes we are too close to our own trees to see what we’ve missed! ;D

I’ve bitten the bullet and ordered the marriage certificate. I need to know his father’s details to get anywhere, and since I can’t find his birth, it’s the only way.

From what I’ve seen on Ancestry, nobody else has gone further back than him …

Hi
There is a marriage Holy Trinity South Shields 25 May 1869 or BMD June qtr 1860 10A 63 which is strange .
Thomas Augustus Rogers and Isabella Storey

If you get the full thing ,it should give a father.
He is buried at Westhoe Cemetery with wife Isabella Dockwray Storey which if there is a gravestone would give full date of birth.
Their child was baptised there Joseph Edward Dockwray  12 Aug 1866 born 22 nd July mariner
South Shields.

Children born South Shields -Louisa Ann Mar qtr 1864 ,Joseph Sep 1866,Mary Isabella Dec 1868,Thomas August Sep 1871 and  Sarah Dockwray Dec 1873.
