Polish to English Translation Request

This letter was sent to Katarzyna (Ras) Bober, my great grandmother, who lived in Rhode Island, USA from one of her siblings who remained in Korczyna, Poland. I would greatly appreciate a translation if possible.

It looks like it might be two letters or parts of letters. Is there any possibility that there are more pages or fragments?

Unfortunately this is all I have of this letter. These 2 pages are the front and back of one sheet of paper.

Here is a literal transcription.

The spelling and grammar are not standard. There is little punctuation.  Many words are split across lines and the letter ends in the middle of a word.  I've not corrected any of that, of course.

The final paragraphs appear on foot of the first page.

It's a sad tale.

The writer says a number of things that are not really clear, even if the language is regularized. For example it's not clear to me who is whose daughter or sister in the Mercik family.  Or what exactly the Zychs were supposed to do, or did.  But I've nearly finished an English version, to be posted shortly.

Thank you so very much for your hard work in figuring out this letter for me! It already has, and will continue to help me as I dig into my family research more!

Though it speaks of sad times and hardship, it means the world to me to have the original letter and translation preserved. Without the translation, I feared the stories would soon be lost.

 Korzenica September 29

Dear sister Kasia and brother in law. First off I'll address you with these words: praised be Jesus Christ and Mary.  First off I'm  writing to say that I got your letter with 2 each inside for which many thanks, you helped me very much.  I'm so sorry, Kasia, that you can't walk on your leg, that's no good! And it's hard for you, brother in law, cause now you have to do everything, and hard for Kasia because she can't walk. Maybe make some kind of warm dry wheat poultice and put it on the swelling?

I changed the dollars and bought 5 meters [i.e. cubic meters] of coal, and with the 50 zl. left I'll buy kindling later. Thank you so much! It helped a lot. I paid 150 zl. for the coal. It was for Jaś who is not well*. Our health is not great since we're old and everything hurts nowadays. Here it's been raining very hard which has held up the sowing, and there's lots of mud, and it's cold. We'll be digging the potatoes this week -- if only it would be warmer and no rain.

Marysia Budzisz 's daughter got married this week. The wedding was at the neighbors but none of us went to that wedding.

A priest from Korczyna came on an airplane from America. He was in Japan on missions and he had a holiday so he came. His name is Półchłopek, from Korzenica. He's gone now.

The priests here are telling people to pray that the troubles will miss us that are waiting for us. Today in Korczyna is the Michaelmas fair, but there's more rain than nice weather.

I don't have much more interesting to write, but to say thanks once again, sincerely and from the heart, to you Kasia and to my brother-in-law and to the children at home. ... one more time thank you for the money which you didn't refuse me, cause I could hardly bring myself to ask and winter's coming.

Granny Mercik died last Palm Sunday in Kambornia and Broncia Mercik asks if you could find Wandzia, that's the daughter of her [Granny's] daughter Munisia, and send her address? Munisia, that is, Mrs Kulig, has died. It's her daughter’s address. Broncia wants to write and tell her about Granny Mercik.  It was a wretched death, she had nothing to eat really.  She left part of [morga = about 1⅓ acres] a field to [Mr] Zych in Kambornia and he was to take care of her until she died, and arrange the burial.  And he didn't do it properly.*
