Richard Gardiner / Gardner in Sapperton
« on: Tuesday 07 February 23 13:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a Richard Gardiner marrying Elizabeth Shipway in Sapperton on 13 Nov 1794. I cant find a Richard being baptised in Sapperton. I do have the following children all in Sapperton:

1 Richard Gardiner (1795- )
2 Thomas Gardiner (1797-1885)
3 Hannah Gardiner (1799- )
4 Abraham Gardiner (1801- )
5 Isaac Gardiner (1803- )

I have an image of a grave in Bisley with Richard Gardner (died 16 Nov 1847). But buried with a Sarah and Peter. Could it be the same Richard?

Sapperton came under Cirencester Reg District & no death in that RD in 1847

Inscription shows both were late of Michinhampton which came under Stroud

2 deaths for Richard Gardner in 1847 - June  qtr Chipping Norton aged 68 & Dec qtr Stroud aged 77

Peter Gardner died Stroud 1854 aged 73

Have you looked for Richard in 1841 & Peter in 1851?

In 1851 Peter is a farmer & living next door is a George Gardner & family which could be his son.  All surnames are spelt Gardner - not Gardiner

1851 for Richard's son Abraham has surname Gardiner

Although Richard married in Sapperton - it doesn't necessarily follow that he was born there

I've found a Richard in Minchinhampton in 1841 (see below). But I have no way of knowing if he is the same Richard as the one that married Elizabeth Shipway. The image on the stone confuses matters by not saying how or if Sarah was related to Richard. I think I would also need to find a death for Elizabeth Gardiner (née Shipway) and hope its before Richard marries Sarah.

I could assume it is, but this is Mrs Sikes tree and I'm still hearing about 'Castle Combe gate' where I was 99% sure the ancestor came from there, only to find out it was the next village across (after a trip to Castle Combe  :-[):
