Has anyone had experience of searching for a marriage in the USA particularly if you are not certain which state the ceremony took place in?

It can be helpful to try to narrow down the location via census records, passenger lists, etc.  Usually people marry close to where they're staying or maybe in another nearby state.

If you are working backward, where were the children born? Unless the couple moved before their first child's birth, this will help.
If you are working forward, where was the bride living when she married?

What reason do you have to believe there was a marriage?
