I have looked but thought I would check,. Was there a census for South Africa.

Just saw this :-

Census surveys were conducted in 1911; 1921; 1936; 1951; 1960; 1970; 1980; 1985, 1991, 1996 and 2001. However, information collected in the Apartheid era is uneven and unreliable especially with regard to the African population.

Census records were agregatted and then destroyed so you wont find them
