Missing Mr. Patrick CULLEN
« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 22:11 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find some information on my 3GGrandfather.

I know he was from the parish of ballyscullion and married Jane Mulholland on 23 Jan 1850, in Bellaghy, Derry, Ireland.

I beleive they lived in Tamlaghtduff.

I do not have any other details or any infor on either parents.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

Cullen, Irwin, Logan, Barnes, Barons, Forrest

Hello Dibit,

Ah great! A parish and townland as well as a marriage date.
Could you post the denomination of your 3xGGrandfather and Jane please ???

You'll have to rely on Church records when searching for them as they were born and married prior to the introduction of Civil Registration in Ireland. This happened in 1864. Marriages of Non Catholic were registered from 1845 onwards.

Patrick Cullen was in the townland of Tamlghtduff at the time of Griffith's Valuation:
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php
He had a house only but there are two other Cullens in the same townland, Henry and David, each with a small bit of land.
If you go to the above link and search for Patrick Cullen only one entry comes up and you can click to see the scanned image of the printed page from Griffith's.

As far as checking church records it looks as though someone has already done that. IGI lists 7 children of Patrick and Jane: Mary (1850), Ann Jane (1852), Daniel (1854), Elizabeth (1859), John (1863), James (1865), Joseph (1867). Although some of it is submitted and needs to be checked it will provide a good starting point. See www.familysearch.org and do a parent search on 'advanced search' page by putting in names of parents only and then clicking 'search' button.

I believe they were Catholic, I know Jane is buried at St. Mary in Bellaghy. However I don't know where Patrick died or was buried. I do not have any information on either Patrick or Jane's parents.

I did find the information at familysearch.org.

Any idea where I go from here, to trace these lines back?

Have you contacted the church where Jane is buried to see if there's any record of Patrick's death? (perhaps his name wasn't added to the headstone- if there is one)

Where did their marriage (1850) take place? If it was in a Catholic church it is before civil registration of marriages so you will have to check with the church to see if fathers' names are listed in the records. Otherwise, there should be a civil record of the marriage which should give their fathers' names and occupations.

They were married  23 Jan 1850 in St. Marys, Bellaghy, Derry. St. Mary's is a Catholic church. I did contact the church without any informative response.

So, being married early 1850 there should still be a civil record?

No, "If it was in a Catholic church it is before civil registration of marriages so you will have to check with the church to see if fathers' names are listed in the records."
It is possible that the church records did not list the fathers' names at that time.

Hi Maryderry,

Thanks! Not sure where you found your info, but was there an age at death or any other names associated???

Thanks...
