Thanks Maddy, I believe that's them.  Thomas's age is off by 10 years but all the kids ages match and his wife is not there, she had passed in 1887.  Likely to be them for sure.

The passenger list on Public Record Office Vic website (not transcription) does not list Mrs McNair.. just Mr and chn. Did she die in NZ? (just seen Maddys post so yes)

Also re his entry on the NZ 1890 electoral roll, I'm not sure that means he was still there: he just didn't notify them of his departure. Or its a different man.
