« on: Monday 03 April 23 17:56 BST (UK) »
Hi, just trying to help out a friend of mine, he has very little to go on, he has his grandfather's medals and he has given me his grandfather's service number as 2681 A Harvey. (he is not sure sure of his grandfather's christian name) Manchester Regiment.
He is  very very curious to know more about his Grandfather, can anyone help?

Best
Ken

There is a Fold3 record (pay site) for Alfred Harvey, 2681, Manchester Regiment and mentions his widow Violet Nellie Harvey.

Does this fit?

Where was the family based?
Do you have a name for Alfred’s child?

The medal record shows he was a Corporal.

Around 50 pages of his army file have survived, some very damaged but worth paging through. There are details of his original attestations in 1913 (formerly a hairdresser), previous militia service, dates of service in France, wounds received, a letter from an anxious friend, quite a lot of disciplinary stuff, an address for his family etc

Hi Ken,

What is left of his record are also on FindMyPast.  They are heavily damaged, some pages just bits of shredded paper remain. Here are some bits of info from these scraps:

He originally was with the 4th Manchester, service number 1909.
The bulk of the file is of a court marshall offence of insubordination to a RCO.

His civilian occupation was hairdresser, and he gives his address as 325 Milkwood Road, Herne Hill, London SE 24.  This was not with his family.  There is a letter of concern from a Barnes from this address, stating he used to make his home with them, and they had not heard from him for a while.

There is a next of kin on one attestation, which shows his mother and a brother, but I can't read their names... Welton perhaps?  Clip attached, maybe someone else can figure it out from the address.

He suffered a GSW to the right hand in 1917.  His discharge was 04 Aug 1919.

He indicates he was born in Brixton, near London, county of Surrey.
