How to separate Two Martin Winds Kids
« on: Tuesday 04 April 23 12:03 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks, I asked something similar a while back, but this is slightly different.
There are two Martin Winds. One baptised 16Jan 1699 registered Chester Le Street and father Martin Wind. The second Martin Wind was baptised 25 Jun 1695 registered Chester Le Street, father Charles Wind.

EDIT  - A third Martin born 1666.
Sorry i confused myself. The two martins 1695,1699 cannot be the father's!!!!
The kids are all from 1696 to 1709 but Lumley and Woodstone.

On DRO, there are eight children born with a father "Martin Wind". But they fall into two groups. One with an abode Lumley and the other abode Woodstone House. These I think are children of the two Martins. How do I know which is which. There is a later will for a Martin died 1752 of Low Woodstone House. But he did not appear to have kids.
Any suggestions as to which is which?

Sorry folks, I really wasn't thinking.
According to records there are three Martins.
Baptisms, Chester-le-Street   1666   Martin   Wind, Lambton
Baptisms, Chester-le-Street   1695   Martin   Winde, Lumley Park
Baptisms, Chester-le-Street   1699   Martin   Wind, Lumley Park

The only Martin that could be a father appears to be the 1666 one. But i am unsure about the two abodes. The last child (twins), if he was the father to all would make him 46 which is possible but older for the period. So, two abodes, old father. What's the likelyhood of another Martin, I'm just being over cautious.

When I had a similar situation somebody suggested that I draw trees for all those of the same surname - not just concentrating on the one I was interested in.  If you include all marriage and death info from all the records it became reasonably easy to place them into family groups, from which I could then pick mine.

Build up a picture of all people with common surname at that point and who married who etc and when died.

I think there is a name for this kind of approach but it escapes me at present.

Hi Pheno. Thanks for that tip. I have been doing something similate with a big messy Excel file.
But I think something visual may help. Looking at the names of the children, there may be a clue. All seem to be somehow "in the family", rather than odd names. Margaret, William, Martin. Richard and Thomas stand out as a little different, but even they fall in both abodes. I have been researching the Durham Winds and variations and its messy. I will try and draw out all the local families. Thanks

On family search.

Martin Wind   Christening 14 January 1666 Chester le Street, Durham   Parent William Wind
Plus Charles 1660 & Thomas 1669

Martin Winde   Christening 23 June 1695 Chester le Street, Durham   Parent Charles Winde

Plus Eleanor 1691, Elizabeth 1692, Ann 1697

Martin Wind   Christening 15 January 1699 Chester le Street, Durham Parent Martin Wind

Plus Sarah 1696, Eleanor June 1699? Richard 1701,Thomas 1705,
William & Margaret 1709.

So Charles & Martin both named their eldest son Martin, which is not a great help.

Hi Colc, actually, that data is super useful. I have created a set of "trees" for all Winn&Winds that I am tracking on a Powerpoint so I can overview and maybe connect them.
The info you gave, Martin Wind   Christening 14 January 1666 Chester le Street, Durham   Parent William Wind Plus Charles 1660 & Thomas 1669 I assume are all the same father?

So William Wind father to - Charles 1660, Martin 1666, Thomas 1669 ?
(I do not have Ancestry or I could check myself....)

If so, it is super useful. While there are heaps of errors in the Ancestry Trees for the Winds, the basic data is at least useful. Thank you for these.

Have you tried the free index search on Durham Records Online?

Enter surname Wind.

Hi JenB. Actually i did find them on DRO and some on Findmypast. All sorted.
I did have some of the records already but not connected. I have been able to link up the family now. I'm still a little iffy about the Martin kids from two abodes. At the moment I don't find any other Martin, so "assume" he is to all.
