William King W.A -BRICK WALL!
« on: Thursday 06 April 23 08:01 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone, hope you are all looking forward to a relaxing long weekend!

I have an ancestor who is great at being elusive, and his common name doesn't seem to do me any favours.
His name was William King, and I am trying to figure out how and when he got to Australia, and where from.

The earliest we see him is the marriage record between himself and Hannah Rhodes on the 24 Apr 1862 at the Sub Registrar's Office in Geraldton, Western Australia.
He was described as being a Yeoman residing in Greenough, a bachelor and over the age of 21 years. His father was reported as being John King, a dairyman.

He had four children with Hannah;
Sarah Jane - 1863
William John - 1866
Thomas -1868
Selina - c.1870 (after her father's death, I don't believe her birth was registered)

Unfortunately he died young, at the age of 39 according to his death certificate, so there is barely anything in Trove regarding him. He died on the 16th of September 1869 at Back Flats, Greenough. His occupation was farmer and cause of death was inflammation of the lungs.

As you can see, I'm working with very limited information but I am really eager to trace him back to his homeland.

I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the direction of the best way to solve this brick wall, or even give me a little bit of assistance. I feel like I've exhausted all options, but I also know that sometimes a different perspective is needed to make that breakthrough.

Thank you,
Emmerson.  ;D

On the marriage certificate to Hannah RHODES what names do you see for witnesses?

Can you please list all the information on this marriage record.

His widow, Hannah, does she marry again?

Can you please list all the information on the death certificate for William KING.

Is William KING your direct ancestor?

I forgot to mention too that he was buried in the Greenough Pioneer Cemetery. Here is the link to that data: https://library.cgg.wa.gov.au/Profiles/library/Assets/ClientData/Greenough_Burial_Register__1857-1963__including_burials___Research_Working_Copy.pdf

Hannah has an illegitimate child with a William Graham Ashton in 1872. That child is named Joseph Moss Graham Ashton. I can't trace William after this fact. Joseph ends up going by the surname King in later life.

Hannah then remarries to James Malcolm Paterson in Perth in 1874. They go on to have:

James Henry PATERSON-1874   Perth, Western Australia
Janet PATERSON -1876   Perth, Western Australia
Andrew Malcolm PATERSON- 1878   Perth, Western Australia
Hannah PATERSON- 1880   Perth, Western Australia
Charlotte Gwynne PATERSON -1883   Perth, Western Australia
John David PATERSON- 1886   Perth, Western Australia
Ernest Walter PATERSON- 1887   Perth, Western Australia

I hope this helps!

Hi Neale1961,

I didn't know that information (apart from est. DOB) so thank you for that. Any info I can glean about him is helpful!

The marriage record, 1862, should name witnesses.

What is the document that you have?   Transcription?....image image of handwritten record?

How have you come by this document?

Yeoman is a rather dated word at 1862?

Did William KING leave a Will?

Hi Wivenhoe,

I ordered the Marriage Certificate from WA BDM Office, I have attached it for your viewing.

As for the will, I'm not sure whether he left one and I'm not sure where to find that information. I can't seem to see anything on the State Records Office website except for a few police reports which I haven't had the time to go and view yet.

Hi Meat Man,
I am a descendant of William and Hannah through their eldest daughter Sarah Jane King, who married James Ashby. Sarah Jane was my 3x great grandmother. My mother was an Ashby.

I have a lot of info on Hannah and her family back in England, but nothing on William unfortunately.
