Hi Chaddie

Welcome to Rootschat

In the 1901 census there is a George THORNE age 4 along with a Joseph THORNE age 2 in the Dartford Union workhouse - no place of birth given for either RG13/704 folio 32 page 2

Do you think this could be him ie. did he have a brother Joseph?  Is there a father's name & occupation listed on his marriage certificate?

Best wishes

Furthermore, I notice that there was a Rebecca SIMS at 37 Bexley Road, Erith/Belvedere 1901 who had 2 boarders .............. John LATTER age 14 and John MUNN age 10

RG13/700 folio 83 page 5

If this is the same Rebecca SIMS then it would put her as fostering your grandfather after 1901.  What do you think?

hi,
yes my grandad was born on 26th feb 1897,so i would imagine it would have been after 1901.she is down as being his foster mum in 1911,and if what he says was right, she put him in the army aged 14.but what happened to him before he went to rebecca i have no idea.he told my dad that they came from canada, but i cant find a thing to say he did.
he may have lived at garlic rea, quarrystone cottage, brixham, devon or st pancras.i found the devon address in his army papers and have no idea who lived there, and of course on his papers it says he was born in st pancras,it is certainly a tangled web.

Of course you may well have made some progress by now but, if not, just wondering if the 1911 census would be of any help http://www.1911census.co.uk/ ?
