Maguires of Fahan Street 1870's 1880's
« on: Wednesday 19 April 23 06:23 BST (UK) »
Hello Everybody,

New to the board. I am trying to find out what happened to my GGGgrandparents. John Maguire and Mary Teague. John was a Ragman who lived in Omagh through the 1860's and had several children there. In the 1870's John and Mary moved to Londonderry where they had their final two children. From the births of Mary Jane (1876) and Henry (1878) I know they lived on 46 Fahan Street and 44 Fahan Street. Their oldest son, Thomas also of Fahan Street, was married on July 27, 1874 to a Mary McFadden.

But I cannot find what happened to John and Mary after 1878. I know Thomas moved onto County Antrim, eventually, but cannot find John or Mary after that year. Would anybody have any leads? Thank You.

This might be a death for Henry in 1880, the address was 36 Fahan Street:

Ah, thank you very much! I hadn't seen that. So sad when they pass so young. I now know John was alive in 1880 on Fahan Street. I wonder if these addresses still exist, 46, 44 and 36 Fahan. I'm sure much of the old buildings have been removed.

Update to OP:

I have found out that Mary Jane died young as well. She passed on 15 June 1877. She and Henry are buried in Derry City Cemetery, section L-B, graves are unmarked. Thanks to the Derry City Cemetery Project for that info. So, the last verification I have for John or Mary is when John made his mark on Henry's death entry 25 Nov 1880 with an address of 36 Fahan Street. I still know nothing about them after that date.

Interestingly, I recently learned Fahan Street is pronounced "Fawn". I have been saying "Fay-Han".

Here's the death record - she was recorded as dying on 22 June 1877 aged 7 months from bronchitis at 43 Fahan Street.

The Fahan Street area has been redeveloped and the old buildings no longer exist.

Here's the Google maps and Google layers images-
