Patrick Bennett after 1879
« on: Saturday 22 April 23 23:55 BST (UK) »
I’m looking for Patrick Bennett who was convicted of robbery in 1879. I can’t find him in any census of Scotland or England in prison in 1881. I’m wondering what happened to him.

Name   Patrick Bennet
Trial Age   29
Birth Date   1850
Birth Place   Down, Ireland
Role   Accused
Crime Committed   Theft and Previous Conviction
Trial Date   9 Sep 1879
Trial Location   Lanarkshire, Scotland
Court House   Glasgow
Verdict   Guilty
Sentence   Penal Servitude - 3 Years
Notes   Previous Convictions: Theft
Related Trial Papers   Jc26/1879/119
Related Precognitions   Ad14/79/130

Any thoughts about where I should look?

Thanks
Shelley

The number of people transported greatly reduced from the 1850s and the last ones were sent to Australia in 1868.

From this article, I would have expected him to be in England in 1881. It says “ From 1879 to 1884, male convicts were again removed immediately to England.”

Yes, saw this. Thanks, Monica. In fact, he was in prison in the 1871 census. Not sure what that conviction was for.
