Thank you all!
Fabulous clips and a divorce from his (presumably 2nd wife) as well!
Still no mention of a wife or children from the marriage of 1889. I believe he went from Englaand to Canada where he was from 1864 until he moved to California (first appearing around 1880). If anyone has anything earlier than the 1880 census it could be helpful. Will keep looking.
Also can anyone find his place of burial?
You are all amazing, thank you for your time

A possibility (from Anc*try)?

Joseph Tongue
Record Type - Naturalization Declaration
Declaration Date - 2 October 1868
Declaration Place - Yolo, California
Description - Declaration of Intention, Vol 2, 1859-1925

Reverse side appears to be “Filed Nov 2 1868   E. Bynum  Clerk”

The image may include Joseph’s signature (it could be his).

In 1868 in Woodland, E Bynum was appointed secretary of the Democracy of Yolo County.
Ed Bynum resided in Woodland, Yolo County.
Perhaps Joseph Tongue lived in the area at that time, or made a special trip to the county.
Possibly the image can be found on FamilySearch.

Have you seen the immigration record (to the U.S.) from 1864? Again, I haven’t read all of the details that others have found but he possibly sailed to America and remained here?

Also, a patent(?) issued to a Joseph (father? son? unrelated Tongue?) of Mendocino County in 1875. Unfortunately, no dob for the man.
I don’t know if the site is safe to use (I don’t trust unknown sites)

Have you seen the website with three letters written by a Joseph Tongue of Gualala to his family?

Again, no idea if it is a safe site, so view with caution, please

Hotel Arrivals
Joseph Tongue stayed at the Russ House in 1896.

[I tried looking at the image again and cannot view it. Perhaps it will work later.  It only mentioned his name, no additional details except the date of the newspaper.]
