Joseph Tongue Gualala area, Mendocino, California
« on: Thursday 27 April 23 11:37 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
trying to trace information on Joseph Tonge/Tongue who emigrated to US from Lincolnshire, England in 1864 possibly via Canada. I have sight of him in the 1880 census when he is in Gualala and a farmer. Single at this date. I then find him in the same area of Mendocino in 1900 when he states he has been married for 11 years. No wife is shown on the census.

Can anyone find Joseph on the 1890 census when he would presumably be newly married? I have been unable to discover a marriage for him but I suppose it might have been a common-law marriage.
Any details on Joseph and most importantly any children/wife would be much appreciated.

I know he is supposed to have been the second husband of Mary McCarthy/Reynolds but this was just before his death in 1908 with no issue forthcoming.

Thanks

Very few records on the 1890 census - 6,285 so unlikely you will find him

searching for: "joseph tongue" gualala ca 1888
found a few mentions. this one says the most, but it is what you already know:
https://www.tsra.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Historic-Marker-Private-Brochure.pdf

that source said he came to San Francisco in 1880 where he was naturalized, and moved to Gualala the same year.

there is a record that says he bought land in California February 26, 1880.
I don't know why familysearch dates it as 21 April 1874 on the index.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6NXN-ST3T

Searching for him at familysearch will find a lot of voter registration information and business directory listings for the period 1880 to 1900, if you just want to fill in the timeline.

----------
Have you looked for Mary (McCarthy) Reynolds in 1900 to see what name she was using? I didn't find her.

She isn't with her son Vance
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9PP-2VT

Her first husband is said to have lived until 1931, so she could have married Joseph Tongue just about anytime after Vance's birth. I didn't find a marriage record for them. There is one for her and Joseph Reynolds 30 Aug 1882 in Elmira CA.

And she is buried as Tongue
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/236147043/mary-e-tonge
the obit attached to findagrave doesn't mention any children by Joseph Tongue, just Vance and his children as mourners.
She died 8 May 1911, acc to Calif Death Index at ancestry and probably at familysearch as well. As tongue on that record also.

Another trick would be to look for any of her siblings who died between Vance's birth and hers and see if they mention her.
-- Easier said than done. A tree at ancestry says all her siblings died after her except for three, whose death dates are unknown.

FWIW, her mother, Jane M (Bounds) McCarthy is said to have died in Salem, Oregon, 6 Feb 1908, which might be how you know about the marriage, since you said it was 'just before Joseph's death' that he was called Mary McCarthy's second husband.
