Alexander McIntosh
« on: Thursday 27 April 23 15:14 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me in my search to find out about my 3 x great grandfather Alexander McIntosh.

He married Janet Chisholm at Inveresk 12 Dec. 1853 where he is called a Commercial Traveller.

His only child (as far as I know?), Mary Isabella Chisholm, my 2 x great grandmother, was born 14 Sept., bap. Fisherow, Inveresk, Musselburgh 10 Oct. 1854, daughter of Alexander McIntosh, Book-deliverer.

I only have him with wife and daughter in the 1861 census at 13 Niddry St, Tron Church parish, Canongate, Edinburgh:
Alex. McIntosh   Head   Mar.   35   Leather Merchant   born Inverness
Janet C. McIntosh   Wife   Mar.   34   born Edinburgh
Mary I. McIntosh   Dau   6   Scholar   born Fisherow

He was dead by the 1871 census where Janet Chisholm was living alone a widow, aged 44, a Seed Cleaner at Bottom tenement, High St, Stevensons Close, St Giles parish, Edin.

Mary, the daughter was also living alone aged 16, a Shop Girl, at 74 Rose St, St George's parish, Edin.

However when Mary married James Hill on Leith Walk 2/7/1874, she is called Mary Kilgour McIntosh, daughter. of Alexander McIntosh, Tanner.
I have no idea where the Kilgour came from instead of 'Isabella' and have been unable to find a connection. I have tried variants of McIntosh but cannot find his death cert between 1861-1871.

All I know from the above is that he was born around 1825-26 in Inverness area, worked with leather and was a commercial traveller.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

1851 Fishers Wynd, Inveresk – I wonder if this is Janet?

CHISHOLM   Janet   Dau   22   Dressmaker   Midlothian   Edinburgh
CHISHOLM   Elisa   Dau   20   Housekeeper   Midlothian   Inveresk

I note the marriage birth/Baptism of  Mary

JANET CHRISHOLM to ALEXANDER MACKINTOSH
12/12/1853 INVERESK AND MUSSELBURGH

MCINTOSH   MARY ISABELLA   ALEXANDER MCINTOSH/JANET CHISHOLM    10/10/1854   INVERESK AND MUSSELBURGH

I can only see the transcript of the 1861 census on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk but I do not see Alexander recorded, it may be an error, have you seen the original census.

MCINTOSH   JANET C   1861   F   34   685/3 11/ 8   CANONGATE   MIDLOTHIAN

MCINTOSH   MARY I   1861   F   6   685/3 11/ 8   CANONGATE   MIDLOTHIAN

There is this death record on SP.
MACKINTOSH   ALEXANDER   35 (1823)   SHERRY   M   1858   689 / 235   INVERESK AND MUSSELBURGH

There is this marriage record fro a Sherry to a McIntosh but is it another transcription error?

SHERRY   ELESABETH   ENEAS MACKINTOSH   07/12/1822   674   30 / 118   BORTHWICK
SHERRY   ELISABETH   AENEAS MACKINTOSH)   07/12/1822   700   50 / 137   TEMPLE

!851 census Edinburgh, so I think you can rule out the 1858 death, it is more likely to be this Alexander.

Thanks all for all your replies, which I will follow up.

I've done a lot of research on the Janet Chisholm and her family, all in the Midlothian (her father Adam came from Stow and mother Margaret Dickson was descended from the Cleugh family down Fala and Soutra direction) and Edinburgh areas. She was one of 5 daughters.

Thanks Colin for looking into the Eneas McIntosh/Elisabeth Sherry details. I feel they're too 'academic' for Alexander, but I could be wrong and there seems to be no link to the north or Inverness area. He was a leather worker of some kind and a different social class to them. My feeling is that there must have / or have been a death certificate between 1861 and 1871 for Alexander. Just have two find it, or he his death might not have been registered or he might have travelled outside Scotland when he died.
I wonder if there might be a clue in Mary Isabella being called Mary Kilgour when she married. Could there be a Kilgour link in Alexander's family?... Grandparents called Kilgour, cousin, in-laws, etc.

I'm also going to post in the Inverness Rootschat site top see if anyone up there can see anything.

Regards,
Craig

Hard to say it's him but occupation matches on record of birth of daughter
Not seeing a death for him there is always a chance they separated

This might be worth following up, looking at the ages, it is unlikely to be Alexander’s parents, more likely grandparents etc.

MCINTOSH   Mary   65      Inverness-shire

This looks a strong possibility for Alexander McIntosh in 1851 www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a15570af4040b9d6e6a7477/alexr-r-mcintosh-1851-renfrewshire-greenock-1828-?locale=en

Good match on his occupation.

From this census, there looks to be a middle name, with the initial 'R'. That, together with birth placed given there as Kingussie, made me look at this birth or christening entry:

ALEXANDER RUSSEL MCINTOSH
Parents ALEXANDER MCINTOSH/CATHERINE MCPHERSON
30/10/1827
Ref 102 30 / 47
Kingussie and Insh
