Abbreviations on marriage transcript
« on: Tuesday 02 May 23 03:49 BST (UK) »
I'm looking at a Marriages transcript

What does the (M) mean?

This is exactly as it appears:

James DAN labourer o.t.p. and Mary SWARTMAN sp o.t.p. by B 20 Apr 1800
Both (M) w William Libby, Philip Libby. Latter (M)

Other records have He (S) She (M) or Both (S)

Does this have to do with signature and mark?

Thank you

Yes, I would say that is it exactly "S" - signed, "M" - mark.

FreeREG has transcribed its as;

Bride, groom & witness 2 made their marks.

Cant see any bapts on FreeREG, 1800-1812 and then in St Martin-by-Looe we have;
JOSEPH 31 Jan 1813 to James/Mary, Father a Mariner

MARY Dann buried 19 Mar 1833 same Church age 55 (c 1778)

2nd Marriage, you probably have;

20 Nov 1838, St Martin of Tours, St Martin-by-Looe
James DANN, Full Age, Widower, Sailor, Father JOHN a Labourer
Maria BROAD, Full Age, Spinster, Servant, Father WILLIAM a Labourer
Witnesses, John CAUST/John JAGO

Bapts to JAMES/MARIA;
PHILLIPA Dann 06 Oct 1842 buried 09 Oct 1842 age 5 days
SUSAN 28 Dann Apr 1844

Trish :)
