Army numbers WW2
« on: Thursday 08 September 05 15:22 BST (UK) »
Hi everone,
I have just found my father's commission announcement in the London Gazette for a date in 1943.
After his name there is a six digit number in brackets. I was wondering if this would be his army number, or just something to do with the actual commission
Do excuse my ignorance, as I know nothing about army matters  and have been unable to find out anything on this subject for myself
                                            Regards
                                                   Jane

This is his officer number in order of commissioning and seniority. Usually referred to by the last three numbers.  Number preceeding name in the London Gazette would be his other-rank number.  If you wish for any more information, please let me know.  Not many of us WWll people about!  Patrick

I think certain records are avaiable.  For example, I obtained in 1997 a full record of my service before and after commissioning, including the designation of the OCTU I attended and all promotions and appointments.  Also the honprary rank granted. Write to: MoD, CS(RM)2b, Bourne Avenue, Hayes, Middlesex UB 1RF.  Individual histories of regiments can be obtained by writing to the regimental depot.  I have most of the history in WW1 and ll of the Royal Fusiliers. Many thanks for all the helpful information. Unfortunately there is no number preceeding the name. All the other information I have is he served with the Royal Corps of Signals, and one or two of the places he was posted. Have I any chance of finding out more?

I am surprised that there isn't a number before his name in the London Gazette.  I have a copy before me and all the newly-commissioned officers have their O.R. number before their name.  Not in brackets as is their officer number.  I suggest that you write to the MoD to the address I gave in my reply to Manmack quoting his corps, final rank and officer number.  I found their service to be excellent.  Patrick

Maybe it's a feature of the on line digital archives...And it is the supplement to the gazette for that day. I checked again, just to be sure and there is just the one bracketed number. I will do as you suggest, with maybe a printout of the record in question.
I really appreciate your taking the time to help me
                                       Very best wishes

His officer number is sufficient.  Tell MoD your relationship.  For interest sake, where was he stationed?  Patrick.

Thanks for the advice, Patrick. Dad was stationed in various places, among which were Lisburne, Northern Island, and Brussels -- nearly got squashed by a bomb  there in March '45, just a month before I was born.
He would have been ninety a couple of days ago. Greatly missed...
                          Thanks again for your help
                                            Best wishes
